Thanks! NY Mag review looks promising: "The food looks coarse—little bowls with mackerel and daikon radish, or a quail egg oozing over a chunk of toro—and the first swallow is likely to be eerie and sharp."

Have you been to Omen in Soho. It has very seasonal, Kyoto-style food; there's some sashimi, nothing on beds of rice.I had an incredible meal there a few years ago, and the price seemed reasonable for the quality.

Makoto, on McArthur Blvd., serves some of the best sushi in DC, if not THE best. The chef is from Japan (and doesn't speak english), the waitresses are in kimono and require you to remove your shoes before you come in (slippers are provided at the door), and the fish is of unimpeachable quality -- no preservatives, no injections, served properly and without wasabi on every piece (as wasabi is actually only supposed to be added to certain sushi, and it is the chef's decision). DELICIOUS.

Hi Michele,

I used to feel the same way as you do about sushi in NY/America but I am finally at peace after finding Sushi Yasuda, which I got to weekly now so you can find about 6 posts on my blog about it. It would be great to eat there together maybe?

I'm in mourning for Japan Inn in DC. The sushi here should be renamed suckshi, because you are a sucker for paying the high price for preservative injected fish.
My only suggestion is to drink copious amounts of sake before embarking on the half price sushi night at your neighborhood sushi joint. Oh yeah, Bruce Springstein is a metrosexual god.
